The Kentucky Debry was first raced at Churchill Downs in 1875 and has been run every year since.  This world famous racecourse hosts many thoroughbred racemeets throughout the year, but none are as big and important as The Oaks & The Derby.

The Derby which takes place on Saturday 7th May 2022 is a Grade 1 stakes race for 3 year olds and is run over a distance of 1 and a quarter miles.   20 horses take part in this historic race all of which have qualified via the 'Road to the  Kentucky Derby' race series and are now competing for a share of the $20 million purse.

Here at Horse Racing Holidays we are delighted to be offering a range of official 5 night packages that incorporate flights, a horse yard tour, hotel accommodation and tickets to both the Oaks day on Friday 6th May and The Derby Day on Saturday 7th April 2022.

The Derby Experience

The Kentucky Derby brings a crowd of 155,000 people to Churchill Downs and as the longest continuosly running sporting event in America it has cemented itself as a key date in the world's sporting calendar.

Often called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”, the Kentucky Derby receives this nickname from the approximate length of time it takes the winner to run from the starting gate to the finish line. The Kentucky Derby is the first race within the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, where it is followed by the Preakness Stakes race and the Belmont Stakes race.
